The Greene County varsity baseball team clinched a winning season with a 4-0 victory over PCM in Prairie City Friday. The Rams are 16-9 overall and 12-4 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference with six games left to play.
Senior Colton Fitzpatrick pitched the entire game. He allowed four hits and no runs while striking out four batters and walking two.
The Rams had seven hits, with Daric Whipple leading the way with two doubles and a single for two RBIs. Alex Rasmussen hit a single for and RBI. Jordan Challen, Dylan McConnell and Jordan Hostetler also hit singles. The Rams led 3-0 in the second inning and 4-0 in the fifth.
In softball, the Rams played a make-up game against CMB (Maxwell) in Jefferson and won 3-2.
The game was scoreless going into the fourth inning. The Raiders got a two run homer to take a 2-0 lead, but Ram senior Emma Saddoris hit her fourth homerun of the season to close the fourth inning 2-1. Senior pitcher Marissa Promes hit a two run homerun in the sixth inning to put the Rams up 3-2.
The Raiders threatened in the top of the seventh inning. With bases loaded and one out, Saddoris caught a line drive at second base and threw to first baseman Hannah Onken to get the runner at first. The double play ended the game.
The Rams totaled eight hits, with a pair of singles from Kayla Mobley and Onken. Marissa Promes had a single along with her homerun, and Hannah Promes hit a single.
Promes struck out four batters. She allowed five hits and walked one. The Raiders’ runs were both earned.
The Rams are 26-6 overall and 16-1 in the HOIAC. They have just one more game in the regular season, a make-up game against Nevada in Nevada Monday. The begin tournament play Wednesday in Jefferson at 7 pm vs Pocahontas Area.
